Behind the Briefcase: Lessons from Building a Virtual Assistant Business
When I started The Savvy Briefcase (less than one year ago), I wasn’t chasing hustle…I was chasing freedom.
Freedom from burnout.
Freedom from back-to-back meetings that left no room for my kids or my sanity.
Freedom to build a business rooted in purpose, not pressure.
After more than 15 years in marketing and corporate life, I knew what it felt like to pour into someone else’s vision while mine sat on the back burner. I wanted something more…a way to help other women run their businesses instead of their businesses running them.
So, I took the leap and built The Savvy Briefcase.
And while this journey has been full of late nights, lessons, and a lot of coffee, it’s also taught me more about leadership, balance, and trust than any 9–5 ever could.
Here are a few of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way:
1️⃣ You Can Not Scale Chaos
In the beginning, I said yes to everything. Every project, every task, every client who needed “just a little help.”
But here’s the truth: you can’t serve well when you’re stretched thin.
Systems and boundaries aren’t just for big businesses, they’re what make small businesses sustainable.
When I finally implemented workflows, client processes, and time blocks that worked for me, everything changed. I had more focus, more space, and way fewer “I’ll get to it later” moments.
Lesson: Systems create freedom, not restriction.
2️⃣ Delegation Is Not Weakness, It Is Wisdom
I used to believe I had to do it all myself to be a “real” business owner.
Spoiler alert: that mindset only leads to burnout.
Delegating isn’t about losing control, it’s about gaining clarity. It allows you to focus on the parts of your business that actually light you up while trusting others to handle the rest.
And yes, even virtual assistants need virtual assistants.
Lesson: Every CEO deserves support, including you.
3️⃣ Your Business Should Fit Your Life (Not the Other Way Around)
The beauty of entrepreneurship is that you get to design it, your schedule, your services, your pace.
I’ve learned to build work around school drop-offs, soccer games, and family dinners, not squeeze my life into leftover time.
And that’s exactly what I want for my clients too.
Lesson: Success is measured in freedom, not hours worked.
4️⃣ Trust Builds Everything
Trust is the foundation of The Savvy Briefcase, trust in my clients, my team, and myself.
It is what allows me to build long-term relationships instead of one-time transactions.
It is what helps my clients confidently hand off tasks, knowing they’re in good hands.
Because when trust leads, everything else flows naturally, communication, creativity, and results.
Lesson: When you lead with integrity, you never have to sell trust, you earn it.
The Mission Behind the Briefcase
The Savvy Briefcase isn’t just a business, it’s a reminder that you don’t have to do business alone.
It’s about giving entrepreneurs the support, systems, and strategy they need to thrive, not just survive.
It’s about creating space for what really matters: family, freedom, and fulfillment.
And if you’ve been trying to do it all yourself, consider this your gentle nudge:
You don’t have to. You just need the right support.
